After Richmond’s death, Thackeray was sent to London under the care of relatives where his mother joined him within a few years along with Thackeray’s step-dad.

His childhood had seen the shadow of his father only until 1815. The renowned author had had a rather miserable life. In a colonised India that was a century away from independence, William Makepeace Thackeray had been the sole son of Richmond Thackeray, an administrator at the predominant East India Company.
